Getting with it.

Yes, I used the R word.  In many ways that's something that I've been desperately avoiding like the plague most of my adolescent and adult life.  Why, because it sucks and usually means that I have to stop doing what I want and start doing something I mostly likely don't want.  This is all well and good.  After all, we should do what we want and not what we don't, right?

Trouble comes when this otherwise excellent way of life becomes so habitual that it causes us to accidentally overlook obligations that are really in our best interests.  This is in the category of the attending to the "nitty-gritty" a term that my dad would often use which I seemed to always cringe at the sound of.  In case you were wondering, I recently royally f***ed up, twice and now I'm really feeling the pinch.  Without going into the boring and slightly painful details I'll say that what I want is to develop a new habit of being uber dependable.

How to go about that?  (If it seems like I'm telling all this to you, my apologies.  'Tis really me telling me, and as they say, if you really want to learn something, teach it:) 

For starters, let's cover the basics like:
-keeping a calendar (no, not just on the phone but a real pen and paper on the wall where you see it every day kind of calendar.)
-use sticky notes (These are super handy for really important items.  They can be stuck to the bathroom mirror where they can not be missed.)
-maintain a to-do list (This takes the storm of anticipated activities out of your mind and puts it out on paper where it's not so harmful to your sanity or distracting to whatever's being worked on at the moment.  Plus, there's a tremendous sense of satisfaction in checking those buggers off!)
-keep a white/chalk board (Like the rest of the methods I've mentioned so far this is a means of using the external to bring organization to the internal.  This is a great and eco-friendly tool for hashing out new ideas, jotting down notes and reminders as well as a great place just to doodle:) 
   
Of course, there are dozens of ideas we can add to that list, but for now let's move on to the other side of the story: neurology.  Most of this part will be in the form of questions, because I guess I really don't know much at this point.  I am aware that repetition and interaction build bridges, so that should mean that using the tasks above frequently and working with the results should move one toward a more reliable conduct.  I also know that memories are chemical state dependent, therefore having a consistent state of mind and chemical constitution should better assure that one will remember important things more regularly.

Now for the barrage of unknowns:
How do I guarantee that I will never forget something again?
What is keeping me from remembering important thing now?
If I had a magic wand that could vastly improve the function of one or more parts of my brain to assure this process what part/s would it be, and how would I improve it in reality?

Well, that's a good place to stop for now.  Please jump in with your insights and ponderings.  Together, hopefully we'll raise the bar on our punctuality and the like.

Several people have mailed me about this sort of issue lately so I share the same info I shared with them...
Suggest making a priorities list based on your own 'hierarchy of needs' for each network and checking they're getting fulfilled? Eg, you list your priorities with the most urgent at the top, such as:
staying alive and sane
dealing with immediate threats to health & wellbeing, which are …...............
progressing towards most valuable current set goals which are …............
current secondary goals are …............
having a good time
maintaining further development & exploring new stuff
...and so on... okay this might take some decision-making about what really matters to you most!
Then have a look at which 'needs' are served by each section (do a quick revision on needs):

If all these needs are being met, you're already together, dude : ) Interaction includes creativity obviously.
If you are doing any stuff that doesn't meet ANY of these needs, that's good stuff to postpone, drop or move out of.
Looking at the network domains and their related behaviors might help suss out what sort of thing we're doing too much or not enough of, eg are we taking care of:
our self (body)
our space (surroundings & tech)
our input and beneficial relationships (emotional life)
our creative needs (cultural life)
our minds
our output and our lives in general

...I'm only just getting the hang of all this myself so we are in the same boat, I have tried lots of ideas, these have helped:
1. Start habits that get all the boring stuff outta the way so your surroundings and yourself stay clear of confusion and clutter and you don't forget to eat, wash clothes etc. Get creative and do boring things in times you're likely to get interrupted anyway. Eg, if you have to be in the kitchen for 20 minutes to cook, do some other things that need doing in the kitchen at the same time.
2. Make a schedule with a list of things to do, there are 3 sorts: Things that have a time limit of hours or days, things that can be done over a week or two, and things that will take months or years to complete. You have 16 – 18 hours of waking time per day; how much time do you wish to spend on which things? (Don't consider 'can or can't' yet, this is just the list of what you really want to do). Then go through it and see if you can figure ways to change how you spend your time to match up with your own priorities list.
3. Making a daily list of the things that have a time limit of hours or days and literally erase them or cross them out when they're done. Plan your other projects on days with fewer demands on an If = Then basis such as 'if it's sunny on saturday, then I'll get some garden time', 'if I feel creative, then I'll do some music'.
4. Take a look at the golden rules. When things fuck up we're usually ignoring one or more : ) and finally
5. Mindfulness. Noticing when I get stuck in a project and taking a break to do something totally different instead of battling on.

Lately I find myself noticing how the basics -like paying attention to relevant things in the first place- can be the most useful areas to hack.

I get that this is the point with this activity in general.  After all, we can only do so much in a given time period.  Makes sense to figure out what the most important stuff is and get to it.
Glad to know that you are also grappling with this sort of thing. 

One realization that I had as a result of my "foul up" was that my subconscious will to remain self sufficient may have over ridden my logical sense of joining up with others to access fund for the project I'm promoting.  The result was that I kept missing pivotal appointments only to later determine that was not to be my path.  Funny.

I like to create pie charts.  For one reason, I like pie and the other reason is that it's easy to see that there is a finite amount of (in this case) time to divvy up.  I seem to really flourish on to-do list.  Get's troublesome when I neglect to make one.  I find it very fulfilling to cross them off.  Check marks are rather satisfying as well.

I awoke the other day with one sweet statement on my mind.  "Don't sweat it".  Now there's a maxim I can get into!  The message is that everything will get done in it's time.  There's no sense in getting all bound up in the process.  Just stay action oriented, prioritize wisely and roll with the punches.

Projects should be tended to like a master painter working on their portraits.  Sometime it's just a brush stroke at a time on each of any number of works.  Still, every flick of the wrist is inspired.

...I suspect a great many of us are. We don't get a very coherent model of practical organization without a lot of searching and experimentation. I've used all sorts of games to hack this, stuff like 'what would captain picard do?'(helps get your priorities sorted out); or 'let's be kryten' (this one deals with all your domestic chores)  :  )

I like the pie chart idea, I've used concentric circles (innermost is the most important tasks, etc) divided into segments -slices of pie.

The hardest part of any system is tenacity -sticking with it until it becomes a routine. Once that's cracked it's much easier.

Got great news, I'm free!  Sort of came to the conclusion that my inability to keep an appointment was because the people were twats.  Thank you sub-conscience.  Basically, I determined that it made no sense to take on a board of overseers who would impose thier rule and ways of thinking on me just so that I could be a non-proft and save some tax dollars and get donations.  I know that from an Intelligence perspective this is all a bit of TE crap, but what I've created is really something. 

I've opened Make It So: The Monadnock Makerspace, a place where you can make anything (theoretically).  The best part is that I'm the captain ;)  That means I get to cal the shots and control the input.  Much less stress.

So that's it, just figured I'd share what I see as good news. 

As always, I encourage the sharing of perspectives and pointing out of obvious truths.

That's a great name! Not saying that because I'm a Picard-liker, but because it fits the metaphoric frame beautifully  :  ) I often have a real battle to name things appropriately!

     The name has had a continuous influence on my ability to keep steady progress in my endeavors.  It's become a mantra of sorts. 

Good quote there Alex, I'll be sure to post that up on the wall in the makerspace for the benefit of all.  It also has timely pertinence for reasons I won't go into at this time. 

Make It So is mostly IRL, however I do have a basic website created via Wix. Though, in light of your encouragement, I'm shopping for a new platform.  I don't have any coding skills yet.  Got any recommendations?

It would be awesome to have a strong online presence via an independent website.  We could post tutorials, a calendar of events, our program offerings and otherwise help to better form the unique character of this initiative.

I do have intent of providing residential space so that this can act more like a Homeworld Embassy as well.  That'll take resources and facility improvements, however.

This site (NHA) is using Joomla, which LeScal knows about a million more things than I about, and it may not be so easy to use if you don't have his wizardly skills. But it is free, it could provide the features which you talk about,and the cost of a domain name is so tiny that it may be worthwhile pursuing?
