Floating Home

So it begins, the journey home through hyperspace begins with a single drop in the float tank. To avoid paying a year's salary in the first month to do it everyday, it helps to have your vary own.

I've begun the process of designing a home made Saltwater Floatation Tank and would love to share my developments with you.  Let's collaborate and make these helpful contraptions available to the whole wide world, for free:)

Re: Floating Home

Sounds good to me  :  )
I'd start with an old chest freezer and a shitload of epsom salts. You probably have something more sophisticated in mind  :  )

Re: Floating Home

You know Alex I do.  But then again, more sophisticated is not allows better.  Getting the job done cheap and easy is where I'd like to start.  Like the whole theory of computer being used to make still better computers and so on, I intend to use the flotation experience to design ever better flotation tanks.

I'll be getting more into the designing stages when I have a bit more free time to do so.

More soon:)

Re: Floating Home

Cool; I was wondering if we could get some pictures of some of your previous projects in the gallery or workshop here?

Re: Floating Home

Sure, I'll see what I can come up with.  Unfortunately I put a ton of eggs in one basket and lost the basket.  That is to say many of my previous projects got lost.  I am devoting the next few months to recreating some of these and will certainly post this and what I currently have here.

Time is always against us.

Peace,
  Johnny

Re: Floating Home

Here's a helpful chart of various building materials commonly used in the mainstream industry and their R values.  This will be helpful in choosing which materials to use for sound dampening as R value refers to the resistance of a material to not only heat but also sound vibrations.  http://www.coloradoenergy.org/procorner … values.htm

And here's another helpful guide to sound blockage and techniques for getting the most out of your materials http://www.stewartacousticalconsultants … AGE04a.pdf

Re: Floating Home

Here are some pictures of that R.E.S.T. pod I made. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BCPD/phot … mp;dir=asc I am planning on recreating this device this fall and will likely be defining the design into a towable trailer.  I've found that I've moved so many times in the years since I build this.  It's been a pain in the ass to move it.

Re: Floating Home

I figured it would be worth mentioning that there are a lot of material materials that can have great R values and are really easy to come by.  Since, most of us are probably limited on cash, it's worth adding these material options into the mix smile
Two that are really effective and allow for some interesting form creation are Hybrid Adobe and Paper-crete.  Both involve the addition of pulped newpaper.  The former is the made of clay, sand, straw and paper; the later is simply concrete with paper.  The higher the percentage of paper the high the value, but it does sacrifice strength.
The aproximate R values for Hybrid Adobe and papercrete is between 2 and 3 per 1" depending on the ratio of paper to base material by weight.

Re: Floating Home

Hi dude,
Great info; thanks!
This stuff should go in HW material, it will be very useful for those involved in building projects...?

Re: Floating Home

Cool, yeah let's put it there.  I have a new aproach to this desire to float that hopefully will speed things along and result in a far more sofisticated set up.  I am preparing to lead a Floatation  Cooperative in my area.  There are very few places to float in REST in this area and those that do exist are costly.  My hope is to have many interested people combine their resources and know-how to create a Flaot center that is of the highest quality and lowest cost to members.  It might prove to be a source of supplimental income so that I can sustain myself whilst managing this and other floation centers.  Wouldn't mind paying of my enormous student loan either.
Btw, I just made contact with a fellow that has plans of his own to have place where float tanks can be used and built.  I have invited him to join us here at the NHA.  Hope to hear his voice soon:)

Peace,
Mnemo

Re: Floating Home

Ok, so some may not aprove, but I went ahead and started a Facebook group for this Floatation Cooperative idea.  It's a handy place to compile links and build a network of local participants.  I know that this is the point of the NHA, too.  I'm just making use of a tool.

Anyway, here is the link.  Hopefully you do not have to be a registered FBer to see it.  http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/gro … 5900785043

fingers crossed:)

Cool I just tested it and no you don't have to sign up to see this page smile

Re: Floating Home

Just found and article of interest regarding the effects of EMFs on cognition.
Here's a quote:
"Regarding analysis of the cognitive tasks, overall reaction speed tended to be lower during
exposure conditions than in sham. Lowest reaction speeds were found in the 217 Hz pulsemodulated
condition. Accuracy of performance in the cognitive tasks seemed to be largely
unaffected."

And here is the link;

Re: Floating Home

Here is a pretty good article that gives an overview of the dangers of cellphones:

Ok, so here is the problem, now what is the solution?

Re: Floating Home

Ok so here is the latest, and perhaps it is a little off topic conciding the original decription to this thread was DIY.  I have descided to go the bussiness route and make this a commercial venture.  Now ofcourse we will accomidate all sorts of bartering and off the record any dedicated Neurohackers are welcome to float for free smile
In order to raise the cash to get the tank and location, etc.  I am planning create a promo video and do a pledge drive on www.Kickstarter.com  I creating this video I am looking for suggestions on how to get people excited about the experience and hopefully be will to put down a little cash to send us on our merry way in this endevour.
Ultimately, this decision to go commersh is for the benefit of those who may be less able to pay much or any at all.  If someone is well off enough to be able to fork up 60 bucks for an hour of floating well then far be it from me to stop them.
Back to the topic at hand.  The task is to create a short information film that says what we are attempting, describes the benefits of floating REST and gives a "call to action".  That last part means give money.  We offer float sessions for pledges, so basically we'll be doing presales.  It'd be awesome if we could just line up a whole year's worth of float sessions before we even have a tank smile That'd make life EZ smile.

Advice on how to proceed, welcome.  This goes without saying, but there's free floats in our tank for any help to get us there.

Peace,
    Johnny
