Re: The Hunt for Gollum

eh, eh... smile

I'll take a bowl of reds! 8D

oh! the dudes who made the gollum thing, they also made another LOTR prequel called "Born of Hope", 70 minutes long movie, very cool (about Aragorn's birth, father Arathorn, and people, and how he arrived in Rivendell):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qINwCRM8acM&wide=1

and there's also a scifi one called 'Human Residue', but haven't seen it yet.

Apparently, they are recruiting (open source project) for a new fantasy project based on an existing novel, they don't say which one. They're London-based.

Cheers!

Re: The Hunt for Gollum

Howdy folks,
...We DO get to making movies dudes!  :  )  I have several sitting here, one of which is still on my desktop as it was made only a couple of weeks ago. The difficulty is the size of the files (this latest one for example is about five minutes long and is already 668KB) that makes it hard getting them online without joining anything, or getting them on to our own site without having to send discs halfway round the world via unreliable post offices.

If anyone is into tutoring me how to move large files around with ease, I'm listening!  :  )
Best,
AR

I'm not an expert buttt .. 668KB is something around a half of a megabyte 1MB, and if you have a video of around 5 minutes long in that size i think is pretty pretty good.

For example most of the movies you can download in torrent/sites have around 650-700MB for 100 minutes aprox.

The "problem" is at least in my country the internet service doesn't give you the same speed to UPLOAD things to internet than DOWNLOAD, so usually upload videos to youtube or a page can take a while if you don't have a good connection.

Re: The Hunt for Gollum

Ah, you may have underestimated my degree of cluelessness here  :  )

I have plenty of experience at finding things and getting things offline, even regardless of whomever doesn't want me to. My only additions to the open source community however have been books and written articles, and a few diagrams. I've never uploaded a video to anywhere ever, and wouldn't have a clue how to go about it. I know its too big to use as an email attachment.

An extra complication is our network here, which carries similar threat-detection and security systems as CTU* and won't let a lot of things happen that are easy to do on most machines, because its paranoid.

I would go look up tutorials on all this if I had time, but currently I'm hoping one of you smartasses will tell me how to do it in the sort of procedural instructions that a 3 year old could understand...?  :  )

Re: The Hunt for Gollum

Hi dude, scary thing about the 24 stuff (just read it), seems like something similar that happend to china?

Is sad but i can't avoid to think than soon or later more and more countrys (and ISP) will take similar decisions.

So you can go to download hosting sites like rapidshare for example?

If the blocking if from rapidshare site to your IP you could use a proxy (you pc connects to other one and mask it with a new ip) but in this case is your internet service that is blocking the page so i don't know if that trick will work.

About upload stuff.

Do you think Youtube is useful to upload your videos? (you can even setting it to be private if you want)

Steps:

1º Log in/Create a Youtube Account (is just like creating an hotmail mail)

2º In the home page of youtube (and logged in your account) clic "Upload" (in the top corner right)

3º Here is where all the action is, it will ask you to "search" the video in your pc, put a Title, description, Category, And if you want to be public or private.

4º Wait to the uploading process (it will depend of the size of the video)

5º Now you will have a link for the video to share with your friends (in case it is private) and if you make it public will be available in te Search function of youtube related to the keywords you use in the Title and Description. (You have it inside of yout profile/account too, with all the videos you upload before)

You have here too a youtube tutorial explaining it too if the above is not clearly enough.

So tell me if this works for you or you want to upload it in another site etc.

Re: The Hunt for Gollum

Hi dude,
I don't tend to follow the news in china unless I'm in china, and see no TV so you've lost me a bit there...But maybe you misunderstood me about the security system here...? First by 'here' I mean in this building, not in this country or anything else, and second, this system is not imposed upon us by any outside 'big brother' type of thing...  It's like this because we want it this way and we set it up this way deliberately. It's not 'the internet' that's blocking pages, it's us, because those pages are not safe unless approached in the programming equivalent of a biowarfare suit  :  )

For an example, check out what can be done via any website using javascript:
http://superuser.com/questions/302963/h … -a-website
and after you find this out, consider using 'noscript' from Mozilla or writing your own getaround if you code.

N.B. "without joining anything".  I'm not into joining anything or 'setting up an account' with anything (including youtube)at this stage in the internet's evolution. As people do more and more social networking I hope to branch sideways into some genuinely private cultural networking.

The idea of 'setting it to be private' with any online space that you don't control personally is a contradiction in terms. I bet if you work for youtube you can view everybodys 'private' accounts  :  )

There is no private unless you own and control the website and even then its doubtful. Saying 'this is private' to a public group user is like saying 'we don't allow peeing in this private section of the swimming pool'.
People on the whole don't have a clue about online security and I think that's absolutely marvelous.

Thanks for taking the time to look though dude! And you have raised the interesting possibility of getting somebody else to do it  :  )  But anyway really I would rather our own stuff went on our own site.
Party on dudes,
AR
