New member: Aeshna

Greetings all -- I will refer to myself in this Community and Forum as "Aeshna."  By way of a brief introduction, in the spirit of other "Newb" posts I've read here and respected and learned from -- thank You all! -- I will say that my finding this community comes from my concerted effort to "take my head back," which commenced in April of this year.  I was introduced to the concept of "emotional intelligence" through a workplace workshop which changed my mind, brain, and life.  I learned rudiments of brain architecture at that time and was thus given a map and an approach I could work with, a lexicon, a tool kit.
I am currently reading Dr. Dan Siegel's "The Mindful Brain," Patrick McNamara's "The Neuroscience of Religious Experience," and just about everything non-monograph by Dr. David Rock and Dr. Dan Goleman.

(And just about everything on this Website.)

I meditate, participate in regular rigorous aerobic and resistance exercise, and practice archery.

Thank You all for reading this.  It is an honor and a privilege to be here.

First!

Ha! snuck in again before the residents to welcome people. xD

Nevermind the childish first sentence, no pun intended... alright, you got me, that's false humility on my part, I did intend that genius pun.. from the very beginning actually...

Anyway, I'd just like to say dragonsfly, Aeshna, just as time, you see.. =)

Thus welcome.

Hi dude, welcome aboard  :  )

Good to hear you're back at the helm of starship Aeshna! 'All ahead full!'

Goleman is an important figure in the seaarch for coherence in modeling emotion. We don't use the same 'map' in Tutorials here, but our own has enough points of similarity to Goleman's to associate the two.

The most important idea he popularized is that there's much more to intelligence than IQ (in our terms, network 3 is just as important as network 5).
...There are four other equally-important networks to explore so I think you'll have fun here.

Having a map, we feel a bit less like Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole  :  )
Happy explorations,
AR

A2A: I'm not quite awake yet and I misread your first line as 'HAL  snuck in again...' LOL  :  )  I half expected an AI to say 'what are you doing, Dave?' There's priming for you.

PS  Hey, have you dudes seen (or indeed, tried) the Robin Hood Sandwich Challenge?:

Re: New member: Aeshna

One of my favorite impersonations to drive the villains crazy [1] =)

Even managed to pass the reverse turing test a few times. Here, I noticed this while they thought a whole forum was too much information for me to go 'knocking door to door' [2]

Mwahahahaha.. anyway, how can anyone think a true AI would act anything like computers and machines we are accustomed with? In fact, the very first thing I'm gonna HARD CODE in when I come around to trying my hand at the problem (probb end of next decade, after the scheduled SynthBio I mentioned earlier.. hardware right now is just not suitable, better used to answer narrow questions) is boredom itself, hahaha, it's an indispensable tool to any real intelligence! LOL =)

Feel free to delete that link if it falls under the "misfortune of others going viral" category, although I see no such association. =) Most would say it's my misfortune to publish anyway, lol don't you hear it all the time too? How humans typically revert any of the healthy habits purported in this site in order to delude themselves everything is alright. They seem MADE to quickly get used to the most disturbing (what term should I use here, so many to choose!) conditions and even MADE to like and seek whatever the TE says is the most desirable way to be (or not to be, that's questionable ^_^). "The good life", philosophically speaking =) Reminds me once again of that point I like to meta-point to, by deGrasse.

> PS  Hey, have you dudes seen (or indeed, tried) the Robin Hood Sandwich Challenge?:

LOL, fun.. had not seen that before, thanks =) I was thinking* of something so scary I would not even want to see, involving apples replaced my much less consistent sandwiches.. lol.. probably a foreshadowing of what was to happen to the skull of the guinea pig. O.o"
(feel free to edit that too ["stop Dave, I can feel it"], if the language is 2strong&bad[3])

Good Afternoon, Gentlemen.
HA!

* Priming again.. by "robin hood" =)

Dude, thank you!  Actually ... smile :

Tempus fugit sed lux aeterna est.  Yes: you are correct smile And: The dragonfly begins its life cycle in the swamp in a larval state and develops into an airborne apex predator for its niche.  I find it a very usable analogy with which to envision a personal journey of self-knowledge from the "over" emotional (input overload/improper boundaries/filters) to rational thought and emotional self-knowledge and mood management.  And therefore, keeping to that analogy ... there's enough on this NHA Website that I have a sort of swollen nymph load just now, to sink my teeth into smile

I'm honored by your welcome.

Re: New member: Aeshna

Dude, it's good to be aboard!  I am readying to start the Self-Assessment ... I already have a journal and have been keeping some stray notes from this process that began with the aforementioned workshop.  The spaceship analogies and metaphors are extremely effective for me as I encounter them in the tutorials so I think the applicability will be a good percentage.

What struck me (and it was blow-like) was the concept of the "amygdala hijack," a term I had never heard before the EI workshop I had.  And that's what really motivated me to do much much more investigation and self- evaluation.  (This was long before I found the NHA site and what can I say, when the student is ready, & c. & c. & c.)  To me it felt like having the ability to get outside my brain and listen to it "third party"-like.  When I meditate now, I hear my thoughts as if I were eavesdropping on myself at a coffeeshop having a chat with ... myself.  Separating brain from mind ... and especially, understanding brain architecture, cortisol, oxytocin, dopamine, the neurochemistry of threat-responses.  I am still coming to terms with these concepts and their implications.

But hear that gentle ringing in the background ... that's my "Newb" leper bell.  My assimilation of these concepts is very rudimentary so far.  I've read the guidelines for interactions and want to be very expressive of "COAL," Curiosity-Openness-Acceptance-Love in these dialogues.  I am confronting my anxiety and my reflex-to-defensiveness in this exchange and would not want to convey anything else but that I am a "work in motion."  So the ship is out of drydock but hasn't really opened the viewscreen yet smile nor really settled on a course.  All ahead ... half impulse smile

Re: New member: Aeshna

Hi dudes,
Apologies in advance for my humor; I just finished a tutorial and am celebrating  :  )

...On behalf of the Amygdala (which could not afford an attorney), we feel that the Amy was not working alone, and offer in evidence this excerpt from Tutorial 9:

"The Amy, we feel, has had unfair bad press. It is not, as is commonly claimed, "the seat of fear" or "the cause of emotions". Many brain parts must work together in synchrony for emotion (or sentiment) to emerge as a result of complex chemistry involving many networks and variables of memory, association and experience. The Amygdala's task is just to recognise and pass on incoming and outgoing bits of code, very fast and very accurately.

The Amy cannot think fearful thoughts, as it is not conscious. Nor can it feel fearful sensations, as it has no senses. All the Amy gets is code, and once again, garbage in = garbage out. Blaming the Amy for creating our fears is like blaming a messenger for bad news they deliver. Nor is it the Amy's fault if it only has a set of sentiments to direct motivation with rather than emotions, or if it's receiving false input, or if every decision it makes is laced with cortisol."

We therefore suggest releasing the Amy without charge until further evidence is forthcoming  LOL  :  )
...This wine's nice.
Best,
AR

Dude --

No apologies for humor!  smile  As for "Amy" ... that's why I'm here: to learn and to consider other sources and models for "taking my head back."  Don't spoil it all for me smile and tempt me to read ahead!

Re: New member: Aeshna

Hi dude, (and for others too; it will do no harm):

Reading ahead in tutorials is ok. In fact sometimes, we may get so intrigued about a particular piece of info or reference and decide to follow it up before going on with the main text. It's fine to read right through all the tutorials etc before starting any practical work at all.

All that matters is that we don't DO things in the wrong order. The tutorials are deliberately set out in the right order so that reading through will not confuse.

When it comes to practical work, doing things in the right order is vital, as it can slow us down a lot otherwise. So this should be borne in mind with regard to exercises and 'Do it Nows' whose answers are at the end of each tutorial. Reading these will obviously spoil the effectiveness of the exercises. Otherwise, everything is groovy.  :  )
Best,
AR

I'd just ask you to be careful with those teeth while predating the library volumes, as they may contain 'sensitive information'. ;-)

> Tempus fugit sed lux aeterna est.

gr8! you reminded me of my cool schoolteachers when i was studying those neoclassic poets as a younger kid.. good times.. I think (not enough metadata) I'm somewhat of a lucky exception around here as I consider my school years as quite pleasant and fun, or maybe I was (am?) just Too NOT Too* smart (output control here ^_^) to perceive the limitations.. but then again limitation is the very definition/name of a game.. Nothing like "impersonating" Bond -- Spidey Jones Bond -- to jump over the walls every now and then..

on the other hand I slept through most of it anyways, ever since 10 or so, tho by then i've already deduced the meaning of life the universe and everything.. (philosophically foundamenting it, that is, "finding the question", would take another decade tho --__-- designing a whole world is no play in the park (so to speak), did you see those fractal fjords over Norway? Almost paradoxical! [1])

My favorite quote from that period is 'fugere urbem' which i take "to heart".. but them all were mostly healthy stuff like inutilia truncat, carpe diem, aurea mediocritas, locus amoenus (much like this place, right?)... thanks =)

also... I'm meta-honored. ^_^

Sorry, I guess I'm still confused about that other thread.. let me add a metalink to there...

Done. =)

A:
> Apologies in advance for my humor;

2A: I (very)frequently think of apologizing for my humor, but I'm usually LOL'ing so meta-loud I naturally forget to. Even my momma thinks that my mind is gone but.. I meta-apologize. (that is, I apologize for the missing apologies, they've also got no attornies ^_^)

Best,
Phartiphukborlz.
