Stolen Property

Just recently something of mine was taken, and with just a bit of sluthing I discovered the likliest of suspects.  With the mystery nearly solved, I was left with the new challenge of actually gettting it back and started to ponder which is the most beneficial and effect way for everyone.  Figured this would be a great opportunity to hear all the different aproaches people would take.

Some more detail for the sake of clarification.  I had a stationary excersize bike that powered a cider press.  The bike turned up missing.  The likely suspect: fraternity boys.  My thought is to offer to give a free cidering demo to the faternity at one of their events and ask, "gee would anyone happen to have an excersize bike, that would make this much easier."  Further enticement: hard cider :-0

Maybe it's better if you were to give the cider press for free to the faternity saying: "Gee, I would have kept this cider press but my exersize bike somehow disappeared. If you want this press guys you can have it, I am thinking [in this case 'u'] to quit exersizing stationarily, and besides I am tired of drinking cider". Meanwhile, gradually and covertly, distance yourself from those guys for at least temporarily until you feel very ready to handle the situation.
Another idea: You could use the cider press for meditation. Sit on it, put your chin on one of your hands (or both hands) and think hard without using words (I mean "don't think in words if possible").

Re: Stolen Property

Hi dude,

well, one question: do they know they have stolen it from you? Because if yes, you are in a much more complicated position than if not.

Re: Stolen Property

Good news dudes,
It seems the "talk to them and ask for it back aproach was the proper way to go.  They gave it back!  :D It turns out that the guy who took it, knew me and what the bike was for.  His intent was actually to be helpful.  He wanted to make sure it was safe.  I ama very apreciative, though a note would have been nice to avoid the diress of not knowing.

All's well that ends well smile

Re: Stolen Property

Hi guys,
As usual with polls, none of the above  :  )

Firstly, if I definitely know who stole it, I'd tell nobody. I'd then compare what they're doing with it to what I normally do with it.

If they are putting it to more beneficial use than I, I'd ignore it.
(This is exactly what happened some years ago when someone nicked my sons bike. He hardly ever rode it, didn't lock it up and couldn't be bothered to sell it, so he said, they probably need it more than I do).

If they are not, I'd quietly steal it back, paint it a different color purely for humorous purposes,  and get on with life, obviously learning two things -one, don't trust this thief around my gear and two, improve my own security.

You've obviously resolved this successfully already, but would the interaction have been as effective if the thief had been less intelligent? The response depends on the person and interaction is great when its possible, so obviously this was the best choice. If the person isn't approachable I'd leave them out of the equation, as above.
Nice one  :  )
