learning

Hi folks,

I just read the basics about learning and memory.
The COMP model makes sense to me so far.
It has not yet clicked, but I am confident it will smile.
I can imagine it working for things where you can observe the bahaviour of the person who is teaching it to you.
First seeing the person doing the things necessary to achieve the outcome and paying attention to what is happening.
Then observing the movements of the person and thinking yourself into their body. Imagining doing the same thing. Using the same muscles. Then trying to recreate the action and getting the same outcome. And at the end varying the skill and trying things out.
Please correct me, if I got some things wrong.

What I now would like to know is how you can learn facts this way.
I for example must learn facts and methods of working with materials on a nano and micro scale. I can not at the moment really imagine how I could use the COMP modell on these facts, but I will give it a try to get the COMP modell into my head:
(C) First I would read about these facts and methods then (O) I would try to organize it into the things I know in this area and things that are similar in other contexts  (in my example probably the macroscopical world).
(M) I would try to imagine the processes in a fabric and how the materials are changed and worked on. (P) I could try to imagine other structures to build or vary the process and the results.

Then meditate to get my serotonin up and get the things into my long term memory.

Please correct my interpretation and I would be very happy if you could give me other examples.

Re: learning

Hi dude, welcome to the group  :  )

Sounds like you've got the hang of natural learning, but what you describe is not how to learn facts.

When learning facts, the teacher/author is your model and what you must model is their thought processes. The game is to think like the author, so that you understand what they are saying in context.

A good teacher/author's task is to portray their own thought processes sufficiently for others to copy.

The process is the same; you pay attention to the author's thought processes as you read their explanations, you imagine being them and think like they do, you practice approaching the subject as they would, then you make your own creative variations and your own associations.

What you are copying is still the behavior of the model, but in this case the behavior is their thought processes.

Trying to concentrate on the facts rather than the way of understanding them will not teach you very much. For example I could tell you that “it's very dangerous to Humdusk Squilloms”, and you could  remember that fact really well and teach it to others too, but you haven't learned anything; you're just a parrot (most schooling works like this). Facts are pointless without context of how to think about them -how to work them out yourself from knowledge of the subject.
Best,
AR
