Make It So

It's my intent to create a for profit business that is dedicated to the ideal of natural intelligence.  This venture is specifically a makerspace.  For those who are unfamiliar with this concept, it is simple a place where people can share tool, workspace and expertise to make things.  There is all sorts of collaboration happing at makerspaces and often times products are created that are manufacture in large scale.  At the core however these serve as havens for DIYers.

So that's the gist.  If you have any questions please let me have 'em and I'll do my best to fill in more details as necessary.  For the meantime, back to my primary intent of this thread.

How do we Make It So smartly?

This is what I have so far.
Knowing how and having the ability to make things it inherently intellectual
Know whether you should and how to handle it once you have is wisdom
Staying cool about the fact that you've done it and not latching onto the results is emotionally balanced
And sharing all this with your allies is intelligent.

So here's how that might translate into making a smart business.
If I were to institute an idea that enabled people of all walks of life to learn that would be good. This would be open source to everyone regardless of educational background, age, or financial standing. They'd learn from experts, basic to advance skills in a range of disciplines.  They would be able to apply this knowledge and skill to create objects, services and solutions in general that generated the capital and/or ease of living they required.  It would also enable them to better work in the service of humanity and more important intelligence.
This biz would operate cooperatively with existing business to increase the success for all.  We would use existing resource and system to mean our goals without compromising our core values or degrading the earth.

Ok, so that's all the mind stream I've got for ya right now.  Back to the deadline.  As always, insights welcome.

Re: Make It So

So it has been mentioned that a "for profit biz in the service of intelligence is, perhaps, a bit of an oxymoron.  Mostly, I wish to create a self sufficient business model that does rely on grants.  We're clever cats and should be able to make this clockwork tick without a bailout.  The concept is very similar to the tenant of Homeworld in that we share resources.  Perhaps it's my goal to make this makerspace/HW venture a bit more above the board, so to speak.

It seems that creating two distinct entities, one for and the other non-profit, would be ideal.  That way we can operate based on a balanced, growth oriented financial model while at the same time petitioning grant monies to give dudes who can't afford membership with a way in.

Re: Make It So

While I support the business aspect of the Makerspace, I am really fascinated with the potential a space like this would have for others. As a maker, I know it can be frustrating at times to come up with new ideas and learn new skills (woodworking, advanced sewing, etc.). This is why I think it would be ideal to learn from others and collaborate.  Also, more importantly, creating and making is a big part of my life. I find that producing something is meditative and I find great bliss through this process.  I haven't figured out what I'm all about yet but I do know that my most joyful moments are spent in the creative process.   Go Makerspace go!

Re: Make It So

I had seen it actually, but thanks for posting it because I saw a line that mention some difficulties with building requirements.  It mentions a makerspace local to us here in NH that was closed after an inspection deemed it's ventalation system inadequate.

Making is a big part of who I am, too.  My understanding is that what differentiates our current human evolutionary stage from others is the propensity for using tools. (ofcourse there are other animals with this ability: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LThJWvJ2YNI)

And for a bit of research along those line:http://rstb.royalsocietypublishing.org/ … 20408.full

Speaking if tools, here's an online tool for organizing projects and keeping people coordinated that folks might useful. www.trello.com

Have fun :D
