Open letter to Nature

For the people who are aware to the news in the 'mainstream' probably read this study from nature

Now, remember the golden rule "do the things in the right order", i should be not surprised anymore when maybe we found that kind of studys whithout significant changes in "intelligence".

But of course is cool when we found studys in the mainstream with more proofs that we are going to the right track.

This one is a 'replie' to the nature study, where explain that sometimes, the lack of results is because training with poor intensity and time. They makes an anology with cardiovascular training, you probably will not see great changes in a lapse of a month or two if you only train once or twice a week 20 minutes.

To put this in context, 4 hours of cardiovascular fitness training over 6 weeks would likely yield minimal health benefits; there is no reason to believe that 4 hours of brain fitness training would be any more effective at improving cognitive ability. The short period of cognitive training Owen et al. used raises the question: did they really put brain training to the test?

Seems like the mainstream is going to give more and more importance to this aspect/part of intelligence? and with this i mean working memory stuff? i think is one of the few things in the mainstream that is getting decent results to a lot of people and getting more and more popular (probably because of the jeaggi study? as far i'm aware the only one who proofs an increase in 'fluid intelligence' with the training at only one task?), can working memory be part of a puzzle more important (have more impact in overall intelligence) than the other 5?

The most popular software to train it is the n-back one.

To tell my experience, i did some training of that (before i found neurohackers), it was only a few weeks, and i reached 5 dual n-back, it really feels that you are doing a great workout to the brain, and i think i feel some positive changes in my attention and probably a better memory overall, but it was like 1 year ago, so i don't remember exactly the feeling/changes.

Now, with all i'm learning here, i must be patient and work to the early networks first, and when is time to get care of N6, use this baby again! smile

Anyone here has some experience with working memory or duanback training?

Hi dude,
I've found the main problem with this sort of stuff is the temporary nature of results. Unless training goes on constantly, it appears that abilities don't remain enhanced (unlike doing things in the right order). It also could be a really bad idea for frontloaders as it could possibly slow down progress.
Doing it at the right time; eg, right when you need to be building up the front nets after preparing the rest though, I would expct could bring permanent benefits for N4 & 5.
N6 is a different matter entirely and as far as I can tell won't be benefited by 'brain training' techniques (except in the case of using them to build up supporting networks).
